Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2022

Reviews

Bewertung Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2022Cameron Douglas MS: 94/100 (excellent). Ripe, pure, vibrant, varietal, complex and new. Aromas of dark plums and cherries, layers of savoury spices, barrel spices and a mix of red flowers including roses. A lovely bouquet with a youthful energy and power. On the palate an equally vibrant wine touches first with tannins and acidity making their presence known, then a core of dark red berry fruits and savoury baking spice qualities take over. Tannins are in abundance, are firm-ish and acidity all set the structure in place. A lovely wine that will age well, best drinking from late 2024 through 2030+.

Tasting Note

A wonderfully red fruited and aromatic Pinot Noir. Spice notes of cardamom and ginger combine with rosehip and pomegranate. A savoury note reminiscent of manuka smoke and prosciutto mingle enticingly with the red fruits. The palate has an array of flavours ranging from raspberry compote to rhubarb and orange zest. Smooth and supple on the entry, fine tannins are buoy by freshness to a long-sustained finish. Mid ruby in colour, with an almost transparent hue, the 2022 is charming and fresh, while remaining supple and delicious.

Winemaker Helen Masters explains: "Crimson is about accessibility. We'd like people to have the experience of a good Pinot Noir, explore the variety and Martinborough's unique impact on it."

Additional information

Type: red wine

Vineyard: Martinborough, New Zealand. Crimson is a selection of parcels from mainly younger Pinot Noir vines from our various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. The vines range in age from 5-25 years, giving a mix of youthful fruit expression and more complex savoury notes from older vines.

Winemaking: Fruit was hand-harvested with the majority desteemed and a small parcel (10%) whole bunch fermented. Indigenous yeast ferment took place in stainless steel tanks before the wine was racked off into French oak barrels for 12 months. As winemaker Helen Masters puts it: "The winemaking philosophy is the same as for our signature Pinot Noir: no enzymes or yeasts are added, providing a hands -off, traditional approach which we feel more truly expresses the site."

Why Crimson?

Crimson

The name Crimson was inspired by the work of the Charitable Conservation Trust known as PROJECT CRIMSON. Founded in 1990, its aim is to plant and protect New Zealand's stunning and much-loved red-flowering native Christmas trees, pohutukawa and rata. The idea for Crimson Pinot Noir evolved from owner Clive's approach to the trust in 2003 for advice and support in his quest to re-establish rata across the lower North Island.

A portion of proceeds from the sale of Crimson helps to fund the trust.
