Rippon - A vineyard rooted in land, legacy, and a love for nature
Located on the breathtaking shores of Lake Wānaka in New Zealand’s South Island, Rippon is widely recognized as one of the most stunning wineries in the world—not for architectural grandeur, but for the raw natural beauty that surrounds it. Framed by dramatic alpine peaks and reflective turquoise waters, Rippon stands as a tribute to both its remarkable environment and the deep respect its founders have for the land.
“one of the most beautiful wine estates on earth” – James Suckling
“Rippon wines today are gorgeous, textured and precise, with an earthy minerality running through them” – Eric Asimov, NY Times
“One of the most stunning wineries in the world, grounded in indigenous values” – Cathrine Todd, Forbes
The Mills family has farmed this land for generations, beginning with Percy Sargood in the early 1900s. Today, the estate is led by Nick and Jo Mills, who continue the family legacy with a holistic, biodynamic approach to viticulture. The vineyard is dry-farmed, chemical-free, and entirely hand-tended—no irrigation, no pesticides, no synthetic inputs. Every effort is made to return to the land what it gives.
Rippon terroir
Lake Wanaka creates a unique environment. The temperance of this large thermal mass, coupled with the protective nature of Ruby Island further softens Rippon’s microclimate. All Rippon wines are issued from a single vineyard; no fruit is bought in from outside the property. Rippon wines are issued from some of the oldest vines in the region. 80% of the vineyard is planted on its own roots and is not irrigated.
Rippon Winemaking
Winemaker Nick Mills, trained in Burgundy and deeply influenced by both French winemaking and indigenous Māori values, sees the vineyard as a living system. This philosophy is reflected in Rippon’s wines: expressive, site-driven, and deeply connected to place. The estate produces small quantities of Pinot Noir (their flagship), along with Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, and the rare Osteiner.
Rippon is more than a winery—it’s a model of sustainable stewardship, shaped by tradition, family, and a commitment to harmony with nature.
“highly collectible pinot noirs” – James Suckling
Rippon views winemaking as a collaborative process with nature, not a manipulation of it. Winemaker Nick Mills doesn’t see himself as a "creator" but as a facilitator—helping the land speak through the wine.
