Syrah

Syrah

New Zealand Syrah wine has a distinctive style. The meeting of bright New World fruit with Old World savouriness; ripeness with freshness, makes it as characterful and distinctive as New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Bright, spicy flavours and elegant texture, akin to elegant Northern Rhône style rather than the more overt Australian Shiraz. Crammed with plum and savoury black pepper flavours and sometimes hints of violets.

Many consider Syrah to be a New Zealand red wine star of the future. Try yourself and enjoy.

Syrah Wines from New Zealand

Have you already tried a New Zealand Syrah? Immerse yourself in a unique wine experience: velvety dark fruit, peppery spice, and elegant structure – every sip tells the story of the sun, sea, and cool climate of New Zealand.

Why Syrah from New Zealand is special

Syrah is considered versatile and full of character among wine lovers. In New Zealand, it produces wines that perfectly combine power and finesse. The cool nights and sea breezes allow the grapes to ripen slowly, promoting the typical peppery note that makes New Zealand Syrah unmistakable.

Top Syrah is never cheap, but the value in New Zealand is as good as you’re going to get because the quality level is so high. – Christine Parkinson, Decanter

Surely syrah is New Zealand’s future: mouth-perfuming, plums, peppers and still crisp – Hugh Johnson

If you’ve not had a chance to taste New Zealand Syrah, you owe it to yourself to get your hands on a bottle. They’re not anywhere as easy to find as a Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, but they’re worth the hunt. I promise. – Alder Yarrow, vinography, October 28 2025

Syrah vs. Shiraz

Although the grape is identical, New Zealand Syrah differs significantly from Australian Shiraz. Syrah from New Zealand is more elegant, floral, and characterized by a clear peppery note. Australian Shiraz, in contrast, is full-bodied, opulent, and fruit-driven. If you are looking for delicate, multi-faceted red wines, you will love Syrah.

Syrah Viticulture in New Zealand

The main growing regions

New Zealand Syrah mainly grows in two regions on the North Island:

  • Hawke's Bay: Complex, spicy-aromatic, with elegant tannins.
  • Waiheke Island (Auckland): Full-bodied, blackberry fruit, and peppery notes.

90% of New Zealand's Syrah vines are located in these regions, which offer ideal conditions for expressive, long-lived wines.

Aromas & Enjoyment

New Zealand Syrah shows intense aromas of dark berries such as blackberries and blackcurrants, complemented by plums, pepper, spice, smoke, and leather. With increasing maturity, complex nuances and a velvety texture unfold.

Enjoy Syrah at approx. 15 °C (59 °F). It pairs perfectly with:

  • Grilled meat, roasts, and game dishes
  • Beef dishes with garlic, cream, or tomato sauce
  • Liver dishes, Spaghetti Bolognese, or pizza
  • Peking Duck
  • Especially daring: dark chocolate cake with cassis sauce and a hint of pepper

Ageing Potential

High-quality Syrah wines can mature for several years. During this time, they develop deeper aromas, softer tannins, and a balanced, complex structure.
