SHEILD: The Label
The Celtic style and tartan background are a nod to Trudy’s Celtic heritage. The unique font is based on the handwriting of Trudy’s father and features a multi-layered shield logo of the name, also reflecting the collaboration of many people in the winemaking process.
SHEILD Wines: The Taste of Place
When the first colonial settlers moved into the Nelson region in the early 1800s, they discovered the indigenous Maori population were already gardening in the recognized perfect growing conditions. Early German settlers and the Clergy brought hops and grape vines to the region. The first commercial vineyards were established in the Moutere hills with the ‘modern’ wine industry gaining traction from the 1970s. Today, the local industry is vibrant and focussed on premium quality wines from carefully selected sites around the region.
Protected from the cold Southern Ocean storms by high rugged mountains on three sides and open to the impressive Tasman Bay to the North, Nelson is ideally situated for growing – everything. Nelson is blessed with geologically young mineral soils, free draining alluvial plains, clay hill slopes, abundant fresh clean water and some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. The cool waters of the Tasman Sea ameliorate the summer peak temperatures and extend the growing season to promote balanced fruit development while retaining natural acidity and bright, clean fruit flavours.
