About Framingham Wines
The Framingham Riesling vines are amongst the oldest in Marlborough. Planted in 1981, they were some of the first vines grafted on phylloxera resistant rootstock in the area. The original vineyard was established by Wellington engineer Rex Brooke-Taylor who took the name Framingham from his ancestral home town near Norwich, England.
The first wine released under the Framingham name was a 1994 Riesling. The winery and tasting room were built in 1997, and a specialist red wine handling facility and barrel hall was added in 2002. Framingham produced wine from their new winery on Conders Bend Road in the Wairau Valley for the first time in 1998. The total vineyard size is 17ha.
The Framingham vineyard
First planted in 1981 with what is now amongst the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough, our Wairau Valley vineyard is based on warm, well drained stony soils. The alluvial soils of the estate were formed by the sedimentation of the Wairau River.
In the warm centre of the valley, with a low rainfall and relatively low frost risk, we can harvest controlled yields at desired ripeness. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are all grown on our Wairau Valley estate. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are also sourced from select contract growers in the same valley.
The Framingham team takes a low impact approach to vineyard management with a lot of hand work and a strong environmental focus avoiding systemic chemicals and planting flowers to encourage biodiversity.
Accredited as a sustainable vineyard and winery under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand program.
