The Philosophy of Balance: The Meaning Behind "Bilancia"
The name "Bilancia" (pronounced be-larn-cha) is Italian for balance, equilibrium, and harmony – a philosophy deeply woven into every aspect of their winemaking. Coincidentally, it's also the Italian word for the Zodiac sign Libra, under which both Lorraine and Warren were born. The inspiration struck Warren Gibson during his time working harvests in Southern Italy, when reading his horoscope sparked the perfect name for their venture. This guiding principle ensures wines of profound harmony and precision.
La Collina Vineyard: A Unique Hawke's Bay Terroir
The viticultural heart of Bilancia lies within its 6-hectare (15-acre) "La Collina" vineyard on Roys Hill. "La Collina" (col-ee-na), Italian for "the hill," features a distinctive north-northwest facing slope. Here, the uppermost terraces are dedicated to Syrah, while the gently rising lower land and gravels are planted with Chardonnay, complemented by small rows of Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.
All fruit for Bilancia wines is meticulously sourced from premium Hawke's Bay vineyards, predominantly from La Collina and other select sites on Roys Hill, including the Tiratore block for Chardonnay, and specific parcels in Otane (Central Hawke's Bay).
