A special place called Marlborough
Marlborough, New Zealand's flagship and largest wine region, which, in combination with its signature Sauvignon Blanc, single-handedly launched the country onto the international wine stage. Today, Marlborough is much more than just Sauvignon; it offers increasing depth in varieties, terroir, and style.
Viticulture is emphatically dominant here, with over 30,000 hectares of vines—more than two-thirds of the nation's total—under the care of producers of all sizes. It produces 82% of New Zealand's wines.
A Pioneering Spirit and Ideal Climate
Marlborough consistently ranks as one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest regions. The Māori recognized this unique feature, referring to the Wairau Valley as ‘Kei puta te Wairau’—‘The place with the hole in the cloud’—a testament to the outstanding protection offered by the surrounding topography.
This auspicious combination of a cool yet high-sunshine climate, low rainfall, and strong diurnal variation (hot days, cold nights) is the key to Marlborough's success. It permits long ripening times, keeping acid levels high, which results in the uniquely piercing fruit intensity and strong varietal expression found across all its wines.
The Terroir: Glaciers, Gravel, and Rivers
The foundation of Marlborough's quality lies in its ancient glacial soils. The extensive braided river system left a threaded legacy of deep, free-draining, stony soils:
- Rapaura is notably stony, while the lower Wairau has more loam and, thus, better water retention.
- Clay is prevalent in the Southern Valleys, providing structure, particularly beneficial for Pinot Noir.
- Awatere is more fragmented, featuring gravelly silt loams and wind-blown loess.
Unlocking the Marlborough subregions
Alongside the increasing range of varieties, the diverse soils and mesoclimates are revealing distinct subregions, within which lies Marlborough’s exciting future:
- Wairau Valley: Old riverbed soils; diverse aspect and rainfall; covers cool inland sites to sea breeze-moderated coastal sites. Hallmarked by pure fruit intensity, body, and the classic, vivid expression of Marlborough.
- Southern Valleys: Heavier soils with more clay than Wairau; cooler and drier further south into the valleys. A broad range of wines, but noted for particularly good Pinot Noir and rich Aromatics.
- Awatere Valley: The most geographically distinct subregion; cooler, drier, windier, and often at a higher elevation. Lower yields produce bright, aromatic Pinot Noir and dramatic, distinctive Sauvignon Blancs gaining international acclaim.
Marlborough's Wine Styles and Plantings
Marlborough's diverse terroir and pioneering spirit yield a wide spectrum of high-quality wines, demonstrating that the region’s talents extend far beyond its flagship variety:
- Sauvignon Blanc: The international icon. Known for its pungently aromatic profile, vivid purity, and a complex interplay of herbaceous, exotically tropical, and deep mineral notes.
- Pinot Noir: This variety gains rapidly in strength as dedicated growers refine clones and sites. Marlborough Pinot Noir displays dark cherry and plum characters with a spicy, red-fruited background, a mid-weight body, and fine tannins.
- Chardonnay: Ranging from elegant, unoaked styles to complex, full-bodied wines with all the "bells and whistles" (Barrique-Ausbau). They offer excellent intensity and complexity, with dominant notes of stone fruit and citrus.
- Aromatics (Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer): These reflect the region’s inherent purity and vivacity. Styles range from dry and taut to lusher, sweeter versions, including critically acclaimed late harvest and botrytised wines.
- Méthode Traditionelle: Although production is small, the sparkling wines are critically renowned. They show bright citrus fruit, fine body, and refreshing acidity, offering excellent value for their first-rate quality.
- Other Varieties: Marlborough continues to push its boundaries with promising new plantings, including Grüner Veltliner, Viognier, and Syrah, with continuous exploration of niche varieties from Arneis to Tempranillo.
Tasting & Pairing Notes
The unique combination of high sunshine and cool nights results in Marlborough's hallmark: a piercing acidity and pungently aromatic fruit. The classic style of Sauvignon Blanc shows intense passionfruit, lime, and fresh herbaceous notes, making it the perfect partner for seafood, shellfish, and light salads. Premium Pinot Noir and barrel-aged Chardonnay from the Southern Valleys offer complexity and structure, pairing excellently with poultry and delicate meats.
Iconic Producers: Pioneers of Marlborough
Marlborough's success is built on the dedication of pioneering producers who believed in the potential of this dramatic landscape. Our collection features wines from iconic names whose commitment to quality set the global benchmark:
- Cloudy Bay: A true global standard-setter whose initial success in the 1980s put the region on the map. Their wines exemplify the vibrancy and intensity of classic Marlborough Sauvignon.
- Dog Point: Founded by two former Cloudy Bay winemakers, Dog Point focuses on organic farming and meticulous attention to detail, resulting in complex, textured, and often more age-worthy Sauvignons and Chardonnays.
- Lawson's Dry Hills: As early pioneers, they are known for their consistency and innovation across a range of varieties, showcasing the quality possible in the region beyond the flagship Sauvignon Blanc. They planted Gewürztraminer with great success and initiated the Screwcap Initiative.
- No.1 Family Estate: Founded by the legendary French winemaker Daniel Le Brun, this estate is solely dedicated to producing New Zealand’s finest Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling wines. The family tradition of viticulture in Champagne dates back to 1684. Their unwavering commitment to traditional Champagne methods has established them as the premier producer of world-class, critically acclaimed bubbles in Marlborough.
