Mahi Marlborough Pinot Gris 2022

Reviews

Review Mahi Marlborough Pinot Gris 2021Bob Campbell, MW (The Real Review): 94/100. Attractively aromatic pinot gris with honeysuckle and ginger on the nose leading to tree fruit, pear, apple on the palate. Dry wine with a pleasing backbone of fruity acidity and fine, ripe tannins. A good food wine.

Tasting Note

Characters from this special vineyard in Ward give this Pinot Gris complexity and depth. Lovely aromas of ripe peach, pear and apple. The palate has an elegant structure with a creamy, textural mid-palate and a long finish.

Vineyard: From one vineyard located just outside the township of Ward in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand. Being at the southern end of the Marlborough appellation, and also so close to the sea, this vineyard benefits from the cooler southerly winds that come up the coast. These cooler conditions again assist with flavour retention and also mean that the vines must be cropped low to ensure that they get fully ripe. The slow ripening meaning the fruit is very intense.

Winemaking: The fruit machine-picked to bin so maceration was minimised. A portion of this juice was barrel-fermented in older French oak to give greater weight, though ensuring that wood is not evident on the nose. The balance of the wine was fermented cool to retain the fruit characters from the vineyard. The final blend this year was made solely from free-run juice, as Brian feels it gives a more elegant and subtle wine, especially with Pinot Gris, that has quite 'grey' coloured skins.
