2020 Ata Rangi Pinot and Vineyard Selection 4 Pack

Ata Rangi is one of the star in New Zealand's wine scene. Amongst their wines, the Pinot Noirs shine especially bright. Ata Rangi winemaker, Helen Masters, has been short-listed for Winemaker of the Year for the 23rd Wine Enthusiast Annual Wine Star Awards for 2022. So she knows how to make great wine!

Wouldn't it be fascinating to experience the difference the soil makes in the glass? Well with this exclusive case you can.

The case contains the following wines:

1x Ata Rangi Martinborough Pinot Noir 2020

Made from only our oldest pinot noir plantings on the Martinborough Terrace, this wine is the best of six small vineyards all within 500 m of our winery. The result is a complex, elegant wine, beautifully perfumed in the classic Ata Rangi style. Winemaking: 40% whole bunch with the remainder destemmed, fermentation by indigenous yeasts. Total tank time 15- 23 days. After pressing, complete malolactic ferment in oak. 11 months total in French oak (35% new), then blended and held for further 8 months prior to bottling.

The winery's tasting note: A full fragrant nose of juniper, cranberry and red plum meld with spice and herbal notes of cardamon, pink peppercorn and dried oregano. Bright and supple on entry, with finely coating tannins that extend the full length of the palate. This release exudes confidence and poise and is the perfect touchstone for the single vineyard releases.

James Suckling Bewertung: 98/100 & Best New Zealand Wine 2022 & Top 100 World Wines 2022. "Our top New Zealand wine of 2022 is the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough 2020. It is textural, deep and seamlessly balanced, as well as supremely perfumed and vibrant. Made from the estate’s oldest parcels planted 42 years ago, it demonstrates the power of pinot noir coming out of Martinborough. A beautiful nose of sliced strawberries, crushed cherries, violets, grated nutmeg and a hint of white pepper. Some hibiscus, too. Supremely vibrant and perfumed with fine tannins that run the length of the medium-bodied palate. Textural. Ground spice and fresh fruit are intertwined, providing wonderful depth and complexity. So long as well. Seamless balance. Superb."

Alcohol: 14.0% vol, Total acidity: 5,2 g/l

1x Ata Rangi McCrone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

SMcCrone vineyard is just around the corner from our home block but here the soils are remarkably different. Whilst the Martinborough Terrace is predominantly alluvial gravels, there is a compact seam of clay which threads its way across a section of the terrace, fanning out over the gravels and creating a cooling effect on the roots in the soil. The McCrone site catches this seam and delivers a distinctively different aroma and flavour profile than that of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir.

The winery's tasting note: Very floral perfume of violets, rose petal, sweet raspberry and spice. Bold and juicy entry to the palate, with primary fruit combining with herbal and iron ore notes. There is a brooding, savoury note to the glossy and vibrant palate, tannins are bouncy and plush. A very compelling release of the McCrone vineyard that balances the energy and complexity of the whole bunch portion with the weight and power that has become synonymous with this site.

James Suckling Bewertung: 97/100. "A lovely nose of sliced strawberry, grated nutmeg, suede and rose. Negroni. Orange. Medium- to full-bodied with silky, fine tannins. Nuanced and concentrated with an array of subtle spice and herbs decorating the beautifully fresh red berries. Spice. Iron. Rust. Savory undertones provide depth and complexity on the palate and evolve and oscillate as time goes on. Open grain tannins at the end. New single vineyard bottling. Sustainable. Best after 2025."

Alcohol: 14.0% vol, Total acidity: 5 g/l

1x Ata Rangi Masters Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

Only available in this case. Owned and farmed by Ata Rangi winemaker Helen Masters and her family, this vineyard was established in 2002, four km south of the Martinborough Terrace. Here the alluvial gravels are mixed with clay, which acts to retain moisture keeping the soils cooler than the more gravel dominant sites around Martinborough village. Winemaking: 70% whole bunch with the remainder destemmed, fermentation by indigenous yeasts. Total tank time 15- 23 days. After pressing, complete malolactic ferment in oak. 11 months total in French oak (30% new), then blended and held for further 8 months prior to bottling.

The winery's tasting note: A full effusive nose with aromas of mulberry, baking spices, star anise and rosewater mingle with blood orange. The aromas carry through on the palate with flavours of pomegranate, nutmeg and pink peppercorn. The clay brings a deeper timbre to this single site Pinot Noir, with the expanse of texture being a central theme in this wine. Fine tannins buoyed by supple acidity spread the full length of the palate, fresh and elegant, this wine has a clear and unique voice of place.

James Suckling Bewertung: 97/100. "Inviting aromas of green strawberry, hibiscus tea, milk chocolate and rosemary stem. Medium-bodied with velvety tannins and silky texture. Slightly chewy. Beautiful on the palate with lovely ground spice detailing the fresh red fruit and berries. Layered and dynamic. White pepper and coriander come through. Spicy, but pretty as well. An exciting wine. New single vineyard bottling."

Alcohol: 13.5% vol, Total acidity: 5.2 g/l

1x Ata Rangi Kotinga Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

Only available in this case. This is the inaugural release of our Kotinga Pinot Noir. This vineyard established in 2001 on the edge of the Martinborough terrace, is our most gravelly, free draining site. Winemaking: 40% whole bunch with the remainder destemmed, fermentation by indigenous yeasts. Total tank time 15- 23 days. After pressing, complete malolactic ferment in oak. Aged in 2280 litre French oak foudre for 11 months. Aged in a 2280 litre foudre (very large oak barrel) instead of the traditional 228 litre barrique, to highlight and retain the bright crunchy qualities of Dijon clones grown on gravels. This is a delightful wine and unique expression of Martinborough that is playful now and will also reward cellaring.

The winery's tasting note: Bright fruit aromas of cherry, red currant, and plum stone, set the scene on the nose. The palate opens with a flourish of supple tannins uplifted with fluid acidity. Flavours of grapefruit and juniper spread through to the end of the palate.

James Suckling Bewertung: 96/100. "Perfumed aromas of sliced strawberries, grated nutmeg, milk chocolate, wild thyme, violet and orange peel. Some mushroom. Medium- to full-bodied with silky, textured tannins that are soaked in beautifully fresh red fruit and berries. Floral and nuanced on the palate with subtle concentration and length. A beautiful wine. New single vineyard bottling. Best after 2024."
