Spy Valley Pinot Noir 2020
Review & Accolades
James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com): 92/100. Plenty of ripe strawberry with orange peel and hints of dark chocolate. It’s full and flavorful with firm, velvety tannins and a fresh finish. Sustainable. Drink or hold.
London Wine Competition 2023: Silver.
Global Pinot Noir Masters 2023: Silver.
Michael Cooper: 4.5 stars. The 2020 vintage (4.5*) is an elegant, finely poised, ageworthy red, estate-grown in the Southern Valleys and matured for 11 months in French oak barrels. Full, bright ruby, it is fragrant, mouthfilling and supple, with very good complexity and depth of cherry, plum, spice and nutty oak flavours. Value for Money: V+
Winestate: 4.5 stars.
Tasting Note
This Pinot Noir is filled with seductive aromas of red cherry, strawberries and spice with subtle floral notes. Fresh and vibrant on the palate with an elegant structure and fine rounded tannins.

Additional information
Type: Red wine
Grape varial: 100% Pinot Noir
Wine region: Marlborough, New Zealand
Vineyards: Johnson Vineyard, Waihopai Valley: Top terraces with clay/silt loam lenses over free draining alluvium. Outpost Vineyard, Omaka Valley: Variable depth windblown clay/loess over clay-bound glacial gravel. Direct North facing aspect, on moderately steep hillside slopes.
Vintage: The 2020 season followed a similar pattern to the previous year. A warm spring allowed the vines to escape frosts, while an above-average rainfall led to early flowering. The temperatures in January and February were more moderate which alleviated some of the effects of drought and lead to clean, disease free fruit.
Winemaking: Harvested as individual vineyard blocks and kept separate until final blending. Some lots were fermented naturally in open vats. Gentle plunging throughout fermentation to extract colour and flavour the wine was then drained off skins and then aged in barrels for 11 months prior to blending.
