NUALA Wines – New Zealand terroir wines with a French touch
NUALA Wines was founded in 2010 by French entrepreneurs with decades of experience in the international wine world. They were fascinated by New Zealand's unspoilt landscapes and exceptional terroirs, with the aim of creating wines that combine origin and tradition: elegant, expressive and distinctive.
Terroir & Grape Varieties
New Zealand's unique location, surrounded by the ocean, characterised by a maritime climate and young, diverse soils, offers ideal conditions for clear, aromatic wines. From the world-famous Sauvignon Blancs of Marlborough to elegant Pinot Noirs and lively Rieslings from Central Otago, NUALA honours the country's best terroirs and grape varieties.
NUALA has its origins in the Marlborough Valley, one of the world's most renowned regions for Sauvignon Blanc. After several vintages of intensive refinement, NUALA Sauvignon Blanc was created: a clear, mineral-driven wine with precise freshness that quickly established itself on international markets.
Since 2023, a barrique-fermented Sauvignon Blanc has been added to the Reserve line. This variant offers a more complex, structured interpretation of the grape variety and highlights Marlborough's potential beyond the classic style.
With growing enthusiasm for the diversity of New Zealand terroirs, the portfolio has been expanded. A silky Pinot Noir and a clear, purist Riesling come from high-altitude vineyards in Central Otago. A few years later, a Reserve Pinot Noir from the Bannockburn sub-region was added, lending additional depth and complexity to the range.

NUALA Wines – wines with culinary appeal
At NUALA, wine has always been about more than just pure enjoyment in the glass. The focus is on creating wines that are designed to accompany fine cuisine – elegant, expressive and clearly intended for use at the table.
The style of the wines is characterised by a clear ‘French signature’. Freshness, balance and a lively acidity structure run through the entire range and make the wines particularly suitable for pairing with food. Instead of opulent heaviness, NUALA focuses on precision and drinkability – characteristics that distinguish gastronomic wines.
The fact that this approach is convincing is demonstrated by NUALA's presence in numerous renowned restaurants worldwide. The trust of chefs and sommeliers is considered an essential quality feature and underlines the culinary standards of the wines.
Responsible for the style is winemaker Paul Martung, a native of Bordeaux. Growing up on the family estate Château Barreyre, he gained early experience in viticulture before working at renowned estates in France and Portugal. A lengthy stay in Australia broadened his horizons to include the dynamics of the New World, particularly in sparkling wine, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.
Now based in New Zealand, Paul Martung combines European winemaking tradition with international experience. This combination characterises the wines of NUALA – classic in finesse, modern in expression and style.
Sustainability at NUALA
A defining feature of NUALA is its close connection to the soil. The ammonite fossil on the label refers to ancient soils that give the vines their character. It symbolises minerality, freshness and timeless elegance – qualities that are reflected in every NUALA wine.
Sustainability is a core value of NUALA Wines. The winery is certified by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) and guarantees responsible practices in the vineyard and cellar throughout the entire production chain. NUALA Wines stand for elegance, authenticity and provenance – expressive wines from New Zealand with a French soul.
