No.1 Family Estate

No.1 Family Estate: Where Champagne Tradition Meets New Zealand Terroir

Daniel Le Brun is no ordinary winemaker; his family has been growing grapes in Champagne since 1684 – yes, you heard that right, that is 12 generations full of history! Daniel and his wife Adele had a vision: they wanted to establish New Zealand's first winery specialising exclusively in traditional method sparkling wine. And so, in 1980, they started the Daniel Le Brun winery, which they sold in 1996. In 1997, No.1 Family Estate was born.

Since they were no longer allowed to use their name as a brand, they chose the name No.1 Family Estate. This was an acknowledgment of the many **"firsts"** they had achieved in New Zealand winemaking over the years.

"No 1 Family Estate is the finest-quality sparkling wine venture in New Zealand, with the entire range rivalling Champagne quality, and not just any quality" - Christie's World Encyclopaedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine by Tom Stevenson

“No.1 Rosé is the best pink bubbly in New Zealand in terms of sheer delicious savoury depth of flavour, complexity and quality.” – Joelle Thomson

A Piece of Champagne in Marlborough

When Daniel first stepped into the picturesque region of Marlborough, he was simply thrilled. He saw the extraordinary harvest conditions and was bold enough to say that they could compete with the best vintages of Champagne. And do you know why?

There is a magical combination here: hot days, followed by refreshingly cool nights. This temperature difference is perfectly suited for the grapes! It ensures a perfect harmony of sugar and acidity, which is crucial for truly exceptional sparkling wines.

Unlike Champagne, where winemakers often worry about the ripeness of their grapes, Marlborough offers a stable, semi-continental climate. This means: consistently high-quality yields – a true blessing!

Freedom in the Bottle

In Champagne, winemakers are often bound by strict rules, from harvest time to the quantity of grapes. However, in Marlborough, winemakers enjoy the freedom to make decisions purely based on the ripeness of their grapes.

The result of this favourable climate and creative freedom? A consistently outstanding and reliable sparkling wine from No.1 Family Estate. You will taste the difference – a sparkling wine that combines the deep tradition of Champagne with the unburdened quality of New Zealand.

Are you ready to try this unique sparkling wine and convince yourself?
