Reviews for Bilancia Chardonnay 2023:
Selected in a blind tasting, these 12 Chardonnays represent the very best of the 2023 vintage.
The Wine Front
This has bite and a bit of grip. It’s zesty and bright, a little stuck match and almond, grapefruit and fresh pineapple, a green apple bite too. Lots of energy, a saline tang, some seaweed in the mix, with a tight and lively finish of excellent length. I also like this aniseed perfume it has and its gentle chalky feel on the finish. Steely. Delicious. You can get about this wine so much.
The Real Review
Very cool, quiet aromas of orchid, white pepper, lemon rind and wet clay are teased from the bouquet with some coaxing. The palate is linear, driven by an tight spine of acidity wrapped in young coconut as it streaks in shades of pale towards the powder-dry finish of oyster-shell and faint jasmine. In a rather austere state currently, this is a very elegant and poised chardonnay which is uncompromisingly restrained and lean.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Chardonnay is pure and unfettered on the nose, offering white nectarine and green apple, layers of preserved citrus, vanilla wafer and shaved fennel. In the mouth, the wine is polished and features sweet melon and scraped vanilla pod. The wine is plump and soft, with lovely acidity.
Type: White wine
Varietal: Chardonnay
Vineyards: three Hawke’s Bay vineyards; two at Roys Hill; la collina and Trelinnoe, and one from Central Hawke’s Bay, Kaikora at Otane.Vintage: The 2023 growing season was not without its challenges but Hawke’s Bay shows its finest under duress. The fruit was harvested in good condition with great flavours.
Winemaking: The Chardonnay fruit was all hand picked, with each vineyard kept separate as ferments. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed with some of the juice run straight to barrels from the press and some to tank for gentle settling. The juice was fermented in new and older French oak. The wine spent 11 months in oak prior to blending and bottling; there was no fining or cold settling.
