Sourced from a unique cool-climate vineyard in the Awatere Valley, this Pinot Gris offers remarkable complexity, depth, and an elegant structure. By utilizing only free-run juice and partially barrel-fermenting in older French oak, the winemaking team created a beautifully textured, creamy mid-palate with a long finish. This dry vintage perfectly balances full-bodied richness with vibrant, well-preserved fruit characters.

Reviews

Bewertung Mahi Marlborough Pinot Gris 2023James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com): 93/100. The nose is polished and refined with aromas of Asian pears, yellow apples, river stones and fresh ginger. The light-bodied palate has focused acidity and creamy texture, giving notes of nectarines, orange blossoms and peaches. Sophisticated pinot gris. Drink now.

Bewertung Mahi Marlborough Pinot Gris 2023Decanter: 91/100. (Tasted by: Natalie Earl (at London, 10 Mar 2026))Appealing sweet honey bread aromas, with sweet peach, lychee and mango. Plump and fleshy palate that comes out super dry and even invigorating, with citrus, grapefruit and melon. Dainty and well handled. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2028

Additional information

Type: White wine

Grape variety: Pinot Gris

Alcohol: 14.5% vol

Food match: seafood platter, Asian-spiced chicken drumsticks

Vineyard: From one vineyard located just outside the township of Ward in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand. Owned and managed by Sara Davies and Andrew Craig, this special site produces smaller crops with intense fruit flavours, thanks to a warm period after Christmas followed by cooler, balancing temperatures that perfectly ripened the fruit this vintage.

Winemaking: The fruit was machine-picked to bin so maceration was minimised. A portion of this juice was barrel-fermented in older French oak to give greater weight, though ensuring that wood is not evident on the nose. The balance of the wine was fermented cool to retain the fruit characters from the vineyard. The final blend this year was made solely from free-run juice, as the winemaking team feels it gives a more elegant and subtle wine, especially with Pinot Gris, which has quite 'grey' coloured skins and is inherently quite tannic.
