Reviews
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, 20 November 2022: 96/100. Chipper, energetic red. Sour cherry, cranberry through to its dry, chalky conclusion, rose water, sage and bay leaf herbal notes, a bit of truffle and seaweed here too. Level and even in the palate, very detailed, fine tannin shimmies through the wine, pinpoint in its feel, tense and long with earthiness the character to finish. the quality of tannin is the x-factor. Nick Mills and family spent significant time in Beaujolais a few years ago, and perhaps it shows. This feels distinct, very serious, beautiful to drink. A high bar.
Michael Cooper: If there is a more striking New Zealand Gamay around, I certainly haven't tasted it.
Tasting note
On the nose appealing aromas of engaging light red fruits (cherry, cranberry, rasberry). On the palate - savoury, fruity, textured and dry. Flavours reflect the nose with the addition with some dark plum and a bit of sage. Medium body with medium, round tannins and a chalky minerally and a light carbonic-maceration note adding lift and freshness.

Additional information
Type: red wine
Varietal: 100% Gamay Noir
Food match: Match with lamb dishes and Mediterranean cuisine.
Winemaking: Picked by hand into small, 10kg cases allowing the fruit to arrive at the winery’s sorting table intact. It was placed into its fermentation tank without destemming (75% whole cluster). The winery’s resident yeast population (non-inoculated) fermented the fruit in a closed environment saturated in carbon dioxide. Reaching a maximum temperature of 28ºC during 11 days of fermentation, it remained on its skins for 17 days and was then pressed and run into neutral oak barrels for 9 months. It naturally went through its malolactic fermentation in springtime and was then racked, blended and run into bottle without filtering or fining.
