This is seductive and enticing on the nose showing apricot, rockmelon, nougat, roasted hazelnut and oatmeal characters, leading to a superbly weighted palate displaying outstanding concentration and depth. Seamless and flowing, the wine offers richness as well as refinement, finishing impressively long and creamy. Flatteringly classy and hugely appealing. At its best: 2024 to 2036.

Top Wines Tasted 2023
A complex and appealing bouquet of white fleshed fruits and gun flint, apple and new barrel, layers of fine lees suggesting chalk and fresh unroasted nut. Equally complex and delicious on the palate with a crisp and finely textured mouthfeel, acidity is on point carrying a fine lees and saline texture, flavours of white fleshed stone fruits and citrus are persistent adding weight and finesse, complexity comes from the synergies and purity of fruit, spice and nut. Such a well made wine reflecting its vineyard and expert wine making. With a lengthy finish this wine will reward those who invest and cellar. Best drinking from 2024 through 2030+.

Impressive chardonnay with concentration, elegance, purity and subtle power. Flavours include savoury/bran biscuit, oyster shell, grapefruit, spicy French oak, ginger and pepper. Nicely balanced chardonnay with an impressively lingering finish. Drink: 2023 - 2028.

5 Sterne
Hand-picked from mature vines at Ohiti, this classy, vigorous wine was fermented and aged for a year in French oak barriques. Fragrant, mouthfilling and savoury, it has concentrated, yet delicate, peachy, citrusy, biscuity flavours, oak-derived complexity, fresh acidity and a lengthy finish. Best drinking mid-2025+.
Additional information
Type: White wine
Varietal: Chardonnay
Food match: smoked fish with egg and stone fruit
Vineyard: Skeetfield, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The Skeetfield Vineyard has old vine dry
farmed Mendoza Chardonnay vines. Skeetfield is named after a historic clay bird shooting (Skeet Shooting) site in Hawkes Bay owned by the Gunn family. Here generations of Gunn's practiced skeet shooting. Then the area was cleared and planted in grapes.
Winemaking: The fruit was hand-picked and whole bunch pressed with minimal settling. This wine was 100% barrel fermented and matured, with 60% new Taransaud French oak. Indigenous ferment and malo-lactic ferment have provided complexity and depth. Battonage on lees has yielded a superb textural quality. Minimal handling to bottling has preserved the purity and intensity of the wine. Skeetfield is a wine with exceptional power and grace, and will greatly reward the patient.
