During the 1990s, plantings of this internationally fashionable variety exceeded those of every other grape, today top quality Chardonnay can be found in every region. Chardonnay now accounts for 6% of the wine production and 2% of the exported wines.
Marlborough (1.086ha) and Hawke's Bay (1,084ha), the two biggest winegrowing regions in New Zealand, have by far the most plantings in the country. They are followed by Gisborne (620ha), Nelson (111ha), North Canterbury (90ha), Auckland (81ha), Central Otago (68ha), Wairarapa (54ha).
Typical regional Chardonnay styles in New Zealand
Chardonnay vines are planted throughout New Zealand. As the winegrowing regions spreading over a long distance with different soil types and climates, the Chardonnay styles can vary significantly.
In warmer regions, the Chardonnays are typically full-medium bodied, round, with rich flavours.
In cooler regions, the wines are typically medium-light bodied, with greater acidity and minerality and fresh, citrus and savoury flavours.
