Vintage Season 2025: After a standard ‘Global Warming Winter’ of moderate temperatures and average rainfall, spring started warm and the vines loved it. Flowering was compressed and strong with fantastic fruitset leading to high quality and even bunches. Regular rainfall and not too much of it punctuated the summer and early ripening period. Grapes were picked earlyish. They were tasty, juicy and very clean.
Regional climate: Nelson is regularly New Zealand’s sunniest region. With young alluvial soils, abundant clean fresh water and a sheltered topography, Nelson grows a wide range of crops to exceptional standards. The proximity to the temperate Tasman Sea ensures minimal frost risk and moderation of extreme daytime temperatures. Grapes ripen evenly and slowly, allowing full and bright flavour development.
Winemaking: Two vineyards located just a few kilometres apart on the stony alluvial Waimea Plains contribute fruit to this wine. Mass selection Sauvignon Blanc was machine harvested in the cool of early morning, with parcels picked on 29 March and 2 April. The two juices were fermented separately using proven Sauvignon Blanc yeasts to enhance classic varietal expression. Minimal winemaker interference ensured the wine remained true to the Brightwater Gravels style of bright, fruit-driven, light-footed wines. Bottled on 1 December after time on fine lees to build texture and complexity.
