Tasting note
Bright and expressive, this Pinot Noir opens with ripe red berries, dark cherry and a touch of wild raspberry. Subtle spice and fine oak add depth, while a savoury edge brings complexity. The palate is juicy and generous, balanced by fresh acidity and firm, silky tannins. Medium to full-bodied, with an impressive texture and a long, polished finish.

Reviews for Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Single Ferment Pinot Noir 2023:

Juicy and dense, with aromas of bright red fruit like cherries and raspberries plus hints of hibiscus and pink peppercorns. The palate is racy and vertical, with a medium body and a polished texture to its tannins. Vivid, lingering and very vibrant. Drink or hold.

The Real Review
('Tirau') High notes of violets and roses soar over the deep, almost brooding black fruit beneath. The palate also possesses a top note, anchored by tannins which start velvety before turning firm towards the grainy finish as more sun-baked raisin and cocoa flavours emerge. Cinnamon oak spice adds to the overall impression of density and structure. The fruit is currently rather closed and opaque, though it already appears polished. Clearly very long. Restrained yet powerful, this will need significant time in bottle but is very impressive.

This year, the 2023 Bendigo Estate Single Ferment Pinot Noir is Rudi’s ferment. (“Finally”, he says.). It leads with crackling energy and florals. In the mouth, the fruit is lean and spicy, with phenolic curves and integrity through the mid-palate onwards. What a super wine this is. Rudi’s experience not only with this variety but in this place shines through all overlays of vineyard DNA and vintage. This is excellent. I like it so much.
Additional information
Type: Red wine
Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir (Clone 667)
Food match: Serve with seared duck breast with almond cream and pickled cherries.
Wine region: Bendigo, Central Otago, New Zealand.
Vineyard: From the pioneer Bendigo Estate vineyard with a vine density of 5,000 - 8,000 plants per hectare on grafted pinot noir clones, planted in 1998. The soils on the beautiful north-facing slope are Waenga fine sandy loam and Letts steepland with an elevation from 217 – 264 metres, on 44.55° south.
Growing season 2023: The 2022/23 growing season was a real "box of chocolates", with plenty of variable weather and conditions along the way, but an overall positive undertone. Pinot Noir enjoyed a long, slow flowering followed by a warm, sunny summer, with January and February bringing plenty of heat to Bendigo. The fruit was picked on March 30th, showing beautiful ripeness and balance. A rewarding vintage that reflects the character of the season and the dedicated work in the vineyard.
Winemaking: This single ferment named “Tirau” has been selected as it best expresses the Bendigo Estate vineyard and the growing season. Hand harvested on the 30th of March 2023 from block 6. Cold soaked for 6 days before indigenous yeast fermentation kicked in. Gentle hand plunging throughout ferment, followed by post-fermentation maceration of 7 days to ensure optimum fruit and tannin balance. Total time on skin: 24 days. Drained directly into selected French oak barriques (100% 1 year old) where the wine aged for 12 months during which natural malolactic fermentation occurred.
What is a "single ferment"? When Quartz Reef talks about a "single ferment," they are referring to a highly selective and dedicated winemaking process for a very special portion of their harvest, designed to yield a wine with exceptional purity, character, and a true sense of place.
Cellaring potential: 7 - 10 years (2035+). The wine will benefit from cellaring.
Alcohol: 14.0% vol
Total Acidity: 5.5 g/l
